A mortuary cosmetologist does not sound like a very exciting job but for Calamine “Callie” Parrish it certainly turns out to be just that. Callie has moved back to her hometown after her divorce and accepted a job with Middleton Mortuary owned and operated by Otis and Odell Middleton. Normally the funeral home is quiet and Callie can relax and read the mysteries she is so addicted to reading.

The death of Bobby Saxon brings the peace and quiet of the mortuary atmosphere to a screeching halt. Bobby’s current wife Betty wants to get Bobby buried and collect his insurance policy. Betty isn’t stingy with the funeral arrangements and wants everything to be first class.

When Bobby’s casket winds up missing everyone is thrown into turmoil. Betty decides to proceed with the service even though Bobby’s body is now in another town undergoing an autopsy. Bobby’s first wife shows up and starts a riot.

Then another well-known business owner in the town is killed. Someone seems to think that Callie knows more about these murders than she is letting on so Callie becomes a target.

Callie’s friend Jane who is blind is there to comfort Callie and offer advice. Jane is a character that is interesting and a lot of fun. Callie has a large family that provide a few laughs as well.

Fran Rizer has given the reader an interesting story, several laughs and a number of surprises.
