Owen Archer is up to his eyeballs in trouble with the autumn arrival of Bishop William of Wykeham. It seems Wykeham has incurred the wrath of Pagnell family when negotiations for the release of Sir Ranulf Pagnell fell through and the knight dies a wasting death in a dungeon in Paris. Wykeham, in an attempt to atone for his misdeed, carries the knight's heart back to the family and is determined to settle the matter peacefully. This may be difficult for him to do, considering the Bishop is convinced that someone is trying to kill him. Indeed, upon visiting the building site of a new minster, he is almost killed by a falling tile. That night, a fire alights in his house and leaves one man maimed and a mysterious woman dead. The safety of the overbearing bishop falls to Owen at time when his family needs him the most. With the recent miscarriage suffered by his wife, Lucie, he is helpless in the face of her sorrow. As he tries to untangle the tight knots of collusion surrounding the bishop, Owen struggles to keep his family out of harm's way.
