In his newest novel, David Rosenfelt returns to his popular character, Andy Carpenter, millionaire lawyer. In his latest case, Carpenter finds himself defending a possible serial killer. A newspaper reporter publishes stories about having received calls from a serial killer, but is swiftly arrested on suspicion of being the killer. Carpenter is called in to defend him, but not without some misgivings. Is this one case where Carpenter is out of his depth?

As ever, Rosenfelt has balanced a serious subject with some very funny moments. Carpenter’s humour is sharp and wry and some of his comments will have the reader laughing out loud. His interaction with the other characters, particularly his girlfriend Laurie, is realistic and the reader cannot help rooting for Carpenter in everything that he does.

The plot of the novel is interesting, with enough twists and turns to keep anyone guessing. It could be argued that Rosenfelt plays slightly too much with lucky coincidences, but on the whole, the plot holds together well. Whilst it may not have the sheer teeth of a Grisham thriller, the humorous, conversational style of Rosenfelt more than compensates for this.

Rosenfelt is a fresh voice on the legal thriller scene and if he continues in this rich vein of form, he is likely to be very well known in the years to come. An incredibly easy to read, fast-paced novel, ‘Bury The Lead’ will remain in the reader’s mind long after the book has been closed for the last time.
