Bury the Lead is the 3rd book in the Andy Carpenter, defense lawyer, series. Andy Carpenter is a millionaire and a lawyer that takes on a case because a good friend requests it of him and not of his own choice. His opinion on the guilt or innocence of his client changes as the book progresses.

His client, Daniel Cummings, is a reporter on a newspaper run by Andy’s friend Vince. Vince initially asks Andy to act as a consultant to the newspaper who employees Daniel Cummings. There have been two murders in the city when Vince contacts Andy to represent the paper. Both victims have been women strangled from behind and both victims have had their hands cut off. There is no obvious connection between the victims since they both come from completely different walks of life. Vince is concerned because the killer has been contacting Daniel Cummings with information about these murders and Daniel has been working with the police and passing on this information.

Then there’s a third murder and this time it is a prominent citizen with some connections to the mob. The police are called to the scene where they find Daniel in a confused state. He has been hit on the head and it is assumed by the serial killer but Daniel winds up being charged with the murder and Andy finds himself in the position of representing him in the murder trial.

Andy’s girl friend Laurie is an ex-policewoman and investigator for his office. Andy is assisted in his preparation for the defense by his law partner Kevin as well as Laurie and other assorted friends. Andy’s friends are a very interesting group of people and add a lot of humor to the story.

Eventually the truth finds its way to the surface but not until another murder following the same pattern is committed and Andy has alternated his thinking between innocent and guilty a number of times.

I very much enjoyed the book and intend to purchase the first two books so I can learn more about Andy and his buddies.
