Andy Carpenter, the protagonist of Rosenfelt's enjoyable series, is independently wealthy, has a reliable and supportive group of friends, a faithful dog, a not for profit organization he has founded and cares about, a dependable (read lethal) sidekick and a woman he loves who is worthy of his love and returns it. So what's wrong? The woman in his life has accepted a police department job in the Middle West, leaving him at home and missing her in New Jersey.
So Andy is a sitting duck when his sweetheart Laurie calls him requesting his defense attorney skills for a young man she has recently arrested for murder. When Andy arrives in the small Wisconsin town, he and Laurie revive their romance, but Andy ponders the wisdom of accepting the job of representing the young man, accused of brutally slashing two young women and burying them in his backyard.
But a mysterious community in the area which was home to the two murdered women piques Andy's curiousity and after a couple of thwarted attempts to find out even a little about the victims he decides to join the defense team.
When other murders occur, Andy expands his investigation and eventually finds a web of illegal activity which has led its ringleader to murder.
As in Rosenfelt's earlier books, DEAD CENTER has a breezy and humorous tone which does not overwhelm the serious themes. And followers of the series won't be disappointed to learn how Andy and Laurie begin to work on the issues which have separated them.
