Series: Andy Carpenter # 4

Rosenfelt returns with another case for defense attorney Andy Carpenter. When a popular member of the NY Giants football team barricades himself in his house, firing on police officers, and is subsequently discovered near the bloody body of a friend and fellow football player, Carpenter agrees to represent him in the murder trial. At first the drug habit of the dead man seems to be the most important fact for the attorneys to focus on. As is the case in much of current suspense fiction, the presence of drug dealers means threats from menacing thugs seeking to protect their territory.

However, as Carpenter and his supporting staff of fellow lawyers, investigators, helpful journalists, and supportive cops begin to discover, the drug element is not the key to the truth of this case.

As in earlier books in this series, Rosenfelt approaches serious themes with a light, whimsical style of prose. He has a skillful way with misdirection and wrong turns in the plot. Another light and quick read from a former Edgar nominee.
