Rosenfelt’s likable defense attorney, Andy Carpenter, makes his return in this legal thriller, Sudden Death. The indomitable Willie Miller, whom Andy successfully defended on appeal and won his release after seven years on death row, is responsible for bringing Andy his newest client, Kenny Schilling. Kenny is a football player who has recently signed a very lucrative contract with the New York Giants. Andy’s first meeting with Kenny takes place at Kenny’s home where he is holding the police at bay with a firearm. In his closet is the bloodied body of Troy Preston, wide receiver for the New York Jets. The case seems cut and dried but is anything but. With Andy Carpenter for the defense, the prosecution isn’t looking at a slam dunk.
I really like how the characters are so well developed, especially Andy Carpenter. His sarcastic wit makes him funny and very likeable, as does his devotion to Tara, his dog. Sam is also a very interesting character - I love the way he talks in song verses.
There are several subplots in the book that add deliciously to the tension and suspense and help build to a surprising climax. You’ll definitely want to read this in one sitting. I hope that Mr. Rosenfelt doesn’t wait too long to bring us another Andy Carpenter novel - the most likeable defense attorney since Perry Mason!
