Once an addict, always an addict. The urge never fully leaves the hooked person even when they do not use the substance. They remain in a state of recovery hoping to never fall off the wagon again. Private detective Bridgett Logan used smack as a teenager, but thanks to the support of her family and her own determinism, she has remained clean for almost two decades.
Bridgett and her friend Lisa Schof met at a rehab clinic. Bridgett adopted Lisa as her younger sister and has helped her through the years. However, Lisa’s former pimp finds her and beats her up for deserting him. Lisa wants Bridget to help her kill the SOB before he hurts her again. Bridget refuses, but sets in motion a plan to scare the brutal individual into leaving Lisa alone. However, their short-lived triumph turns ugly. The police arrest Lisa for murdering her former employer. Vowing to learn the truth and help her friend Bridgett goes undercover deep into the drug world risking everything she holds dear.
Greg Rucka has written a pleasant novel that is quite different from his previous works starring Atticus who makes a brief appearance in SHOOTING AT MIDNIGHT. Mr. Rucka brings credence to the character of Bridgett as he takes the audience inside her mind for a tour of a recovering junkie. This method demonstrates the powerful urges at work that Bridgett constantly fights to keep in check. Yet, she braves all by going into the hell that easily could re-spawn her addiction in order to save a friend. The story line is non-stop action as this novel is clearly Mr. Rucka’s strongest work to date.
