Bantam, Nov 1998, 320 pp.
Carter Dean needs round the clock protection because he plans to provide first hand testimony that will destroy the tobacco industry. Bodyguard Elliot Trent obtains the services of a peer, personal security specialist Atticus Kodiak to provide total security protection for the witness.
The Westchester County, New York mansion that Carter resides in is fortified against a major thrust by the tobacco lobby to silence him. John Doe, internationally renowned assassin, is hired to eliminate Carter. As Atticus works to protect his client, he also has a new partner and lover, Elliot's daughter, that his own teen ward objects to since she wants him back with his ex-girlfriend. With his personal and business lives in a whirl, Atticus must remain focused to stop one of the top pros from killing Carter before he provides insider's information.
The third Kodiak novel (see FINDER and KEEPER) is an incredible tale because of the depth and complexity of the story line which is handled adeptly handled by Greg Rucka. The characters are poignant and real, especially the relationships between the three females in the star's life. They add much to the plot. The story line is filled with action and twists that will leave readers coveting more books from Mr. Rucka. There can be no doubt that Mr. Rucka is one of the leading authors of genuine tales of suspense.
