"Vengeance is Mine" is the crime fiction debut by Helen Sanders. It introduces Geoffrey Bockker, residing in Columbus, Mississippi. He was orphaned at eight, and then had several foster homes until early teens when he lived in a stable home. The story opens with Geoffrey in college at Mississippi State. His girlfriend is across town at Mississippi State College for Women. She is trying to get into Delta Social Club, but is not accepted. She is so distraught she drives recklessly around curves and down a hill, killing herself and their unborn baby. Geoffrey witnesses it. He swears revenge upon the women of the Social Club. This begins the killing and mutilation of some members of the Delta Social Club. He gets caught, but has a good attorney. A plea bargain is made, and he spends 30 years in jail. Upon release, he continues his hunt for revenge.
Ms. Sanders has developed an interesting plot. Most of the characters seem real. I had trouble figuring out if Geoffrey truly had a psychological disorder or not. It also seemed strange how he just breezed through 30 years in jail, and he did great in school. How did he deal with conflict? Where was his rage? I also questioned how he "instantly knew" he had a twin, although he had no prior knowledge. If some of those of those holes were closed for me, I would have enjoyed the book more.
