Series: Lucas Davenport # 16
G. P. Putnam & Sons, Penguin Group, 2005, 390 pps.
A young woman’s body is found naked, legs spread wide, arms outstretched and the police officer’s comment to Lucas when he arrived on the scene was “She was scourged”. Her body was crisscrossed with cuts that had been made from some kind of flail. Her throat had been cut.
Lucas Davenport, now working for BCA had been called to the scene by Detective Sloan. On viewing the body he thought perhaps a whip had been used made out of wire. The girl was a college student working in an art store.
Sloan and Davenport were soon to be called to another crime scene but this victim is a man. And so the killings begin.
The hunt leads them to a suspect but the more they learn about this man who has been recently released from a mental hospital the more they wonder if it could possibly be him. Is he intelligent enough to carry out these killings and keep all the authorities at bay?
The killer manages to elude the authorities and keep them totally confused as to his identity. The book is fast paced and a good edition to the “Prey” series.
