The Death Artist prologue opens promisingly with the cold, omniscient narration of the first artful murder of a young woman. We are treated to the inner psychosis of the killer as he fusses with the crime scene and wrestles with his own mind. At this point, I was primed for a read of dark art and a labyrinth of terror. The introduction of our heroine caused me to furrow my brows as her description seemed to rely on the poshness of her surroundings and the labels on her clothes as a method of establishing her character. We eventually find out that this former NYPD homicide detective has given that life up upon marrying into a life of a socialite/art expert/philanthropist. She is soon drawn back into the life she left behind by the murder of her protégé. A series of murders arranged to resemble works of great masters has Kate’s name all over it and the police ridiculously helpless to solve these crimes without her. A lack of empathy with just about everyone she deals with (including her husband) leaves us in the dark as to the killer’s identity. With the wash of life in the art world and the quirkiness of the killer to keep us going, we follow Kate to the very end as she daringly faces the killer and her past.
