Class/Genre:   Mystery   Private Investigator
Series: Joshua Croft # 5

The University of New Mexico press has been reprinted several of Satterthwaite's series of mysteries featuring private investigator Joshua Croft.

Croft's working and romantic partner Rita Mondragon is critically injured by a bullet to the head - attacked while she and Croft sit on their patio enjoying a late weekend breakfast. Although advised by every cop in the book to stay out of the investigation, Croft sets out on a cross country hunt for the attacker. Following small shreds of evidence, and calling on associates for assistance, Croft travels from New Mexico to Colorado, then to Texas and on to Florida. The desperate men he persues leave a trail of murder in their wake.

The action wraps up in a very nice believable confrontation in the swamps of southern Florida.

The title refers to an Emily Dickinson poem, of all things, and the reference to the poem fits very nicely with the rest of the action.
