This, subject-wise, is a very difficult book to read. If this isn't a subject you can handle, don't pick it up. If it is, you will find this book to be very well researched and well written. The Sacred Robe, Mr.Schwab's debut novel, follows Jamie McDougall into seminary life at the inexperienced age of twelve. Not long after his arrival he becomes embroiled in the "special teachings" of one of the fathers at St. Brendon and his life becomes a living hell of denial and abuse. His parents, sensing what's wrong, inform the police who face one impasse after another as the church strives to deal with the situation within it's own jurisdiction. Jamie is made a victim by the church as well in it's efforts to cover up the situation as his torment drives him to the edge. This novel is painful and gripping. It hurts to read it. Tread with caution.
