Mick Callahan is a psychologist that has fallen on bad times. He was once a successful television star but lost everything to booze and drugs. He is now trying to pull his life back together and is on the wagon. He is offered a short stint on a radio program in his old home town of Dry Wells, Nevada.

While hosting a radio talk show in Dry Wells, Mick receives a call from Sandy Palmer asking for help. Over Memorial Day weekend she winds up murdered and found in the creek at the picnic area. Sandy Palmer is the daughter of the richest man in the area and Mick feels a need to investigate her death since she had asked him for help shortly before her death. With the help of his computer nerd friend, Jerry, who also runs the dump of a motel that Mick is staying in, they keep turning up more dirty secrets about everyone in the town.

I really liked the character, Mick Callahan and his side kick Jerry. Mick comes off as a sincere guy although he has done things he is ashamed of during his drunken years. And he has Jerry to keep pushing him to stay on the investigation when he is tempted to just walk out of the town and forget about it. I thought this was a very good book for a debut mystery and think the characters would make a good series. I look forward to more of Harry Shannon’s books and would highly recommend him to others.
