A true story that takes place in 1866, this story of Jose Arrellanes takes place during the annual buffalo hunt on the Llano Estacado. Jose lives with his parents in San Miguel on the Pecos River. Bringing back buffalo meat for the village is an annual event for the men in the New Mexico village.

On this, his very first hunt, Jose is not completely happy at being assigned to the "helpers" and being bossed around by his older brother. Getting lost in a storm is only the start of Jose's adventure.

This 'coming of age' story should appeal to all young readers with a sense of adventure and longing to be a grownup. The addition to the book of the magnificent illustrations by Ronald Kil make it a book worth treasuring, as they bring the story alive. Definitely a keeper!
