High Priestess is the second in the Tarot Card Mysteries. Warren Ritter is still reading cards in Berkley but has established a family life of sorts with Heather, the young girl introduced in Eight of Swords, and Sally, Warren’s girl friend. Heather is living with Sally and the three are enjoying life until an influence from Warren’s past intrudes.
Warren has been on the run for almost thirty years and now the past has caught up with him. Stephon Ventnor, the twin brother of Veronique a woman who had loved Warren and almost destroyed his life, has suddenly popped in to get a reading. Ventnor is proposing to hire Warren to help bring an end to the killings or as Ventnor puts it “murder most foul”. Ventnor brings up Warren’s past and uses it as a threat to gain his help. Ventnor is the head of The Temple of Set and the Fellowship of the Arising Night. The mother church is the church of Satan.
This is just what a man on the run, suffering from bio-polar disorder needs to get involved in at this point in his life. But involved he gets. He almost loses Sally, has a warrant issued to pick him up for murder but eventually he works his way through his problems and uncovers the identity of the murderer before he ends up a victim. Warren also gets to meet briefly with a daughter that he didn’t know he had. Skibbins mysteries are entertaining and a fun read.
