A FAINT COLD FEAR cements Ms. Slaughter’s position as a “must read”. Once again she opens her book with the strongest opening chapter I’ve seen since early Grisham. And once you cannot put the book down she delivers a story with a punch that is only possible in “series fiction”. While a puzzling plot of staged suicides, racial tension, and University politics unfolds upon the pages Ms. Slaughter makes it personal for her readers. We are invested from the previously touted first chapter.
The character development is once again outstanding. Super Doc Sara Linton is humanized in this outing. While outrage and instinct once again define this lady’s character we are also allowed to see her selfish and almost petulant side. Lena is back, no longer a cop but still deeply involved in the story and a possible suspect. The traumatic events that occurred in BLINDSIGHTED continue to affect this woman and the sadness one feels as you read of her continuing downward spiral is staggering. We can only hope as Jeffrey does that she finds the same strength to fight her demons as she found to survive her attacker in Ms. Slaughter’s first book. And Jeffrey? He has the weight of not only Grant County but the world on his shoulders in this book. As true heroes do, he performs magnificently.
Rarely does one find an author who can address so many social issues in one book without seeming to pontificate or spoiling the linear plot. Ms. Slaughter has once again managed to this in a small town setting. She is to be commended for the perfect pace of this book. More than once I felt that FAINT COLD FEAR.
