Things have changed in Grant County and some not for the better. Sara Linton is involved in a trial that questions her abilities as a doctor. Jeff is trying his best to help her cope.

When Lena Adams, Jeff’s deputy, is arrested in another town Jeff travels to check out what is going on and Sara decides to go with him. Lena has been found dazed and sitting outside a car that has been blown up. There is a body in the car. Lena is refusing to talk.

When Jeff and Sara arrive at the hospital the Sheriff is not too cooperative and even becomes insulting to Sara. Lena manages to make her escape and Sara and Jeff remain in town to find out where Lena is and what is really coming down in Lena’s home town.

It turns out that the town is full of drug dealers and hate mongers. Lena is on a trip thru the past as she attempts to discover secrets of her past. The book skips between Lena and Sara and Jeff and gives more insight into their personalities and personal relationships.

The ending is a big surprise and not a welcome one. Karin Slaughter has posted a letter on her website explaining the surprise. I urge you to let it be a surprise and don’t read the letter until you’ve read the last page of the book.
