Slaughter returns with the fourth entry in her popular series sent in mythical Grant County, Georgia.

The book opens with a horrific assault on the police station by two masked intruders. When the first wave of gunfire is over, several officers are dead or wounded, and young children who had been touring the office are included in the hostages. One of the injured is police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, and his former wife Sara Linton attempts to ease his pain, protect his identity, and bargain for their release.

As Sara contemplates their situation as hostages, she recalls the early days of their relationship. The reader returns with Sara to a late summer visit to Jeffrey's hometown during the months the two were getting to know each other. That visit did not go smoothly - as friends of Jeffrey's were involved in violent events and as webs of difficult memories returned to create trouble for everyone in Jeffrey's small circle of childhood friends.

Lena Adams has returned to active police duty, and plays an important role as the present day hostage situation unfolds.
