In her second book featuring Sara Linton Karin Slaughter has secured her place as a woman willing to write in a man’s world. KISSCUT like its predecessor BLINDSIGHTED does not deal with a nice and neat sleepy southern crime but rather uses the small community of Grant County in Georgia to show her reader just how horrific some of our modern day crimes are.

Sara ,town coroner and pediatrician is meeting ex-husband and Sheriff Jeffrey Toliver at the local roller rink when she stumbles upon a dead baby and a teenage patient covered in blood. As Sara and Jeff along with Detective Lena Adams investigate this terrible crime the stonewalling of witnesses weaves with the glimmers of a truth so terrible it cannot be accepted to give Ms. Slaughter’s reader a guaranteed sleepless night. Ms. Slaughter crafts a wonderful stand-alone here but there is also great satisfaction for her returning reader. When last we left Sara, Lena and Jeff there was much they all had to deal with. In KISSCUT there is no turning away from what has already happened to our trio. They are all damaged to some degree but they are also up to the job of leading us to a conclusion without ignoring the pain involved in the case they are investigating.

I commend Ms. Slaughter for stripping away the pretence of the small town mystery and presenting us instead with a look at the macabre to match that of any of her male counterparts.
