Class/Genre: Mystery Woman Main Character
Series: Tucker Sinclair # 1
Mysterious Press, 2004, 292 pages
Tucker Sinclair is a senior manager at Aames & Associates, a financial firm in Los Angeles. She is asked to write a business plan for the big schemes of Dr. Milton Polk, a neurologist. However, when Polk, her files on him and millions of dollars disappear, Tucker realizes she is in serious trouble. Can she save her reputation and career or is her only transfer going to be to the local prison?
"False Profits" is Smiley's first novel, but it is clear that she has talent. The book is targeting fans of series such as the Stephanie Plum novels by Janet Evanovich, with their fun and humorous heroine. Here, Tucker Sinclair?s jokes and investigative methods as she struggles in the face of oppression will have the readers smiling.
It is true that the ending, with its confrontation between heroine and criminal, is predictable, but this does not take away from her pleasant and readable style of writing. Her first-person narrative allows us to easily understand Tucker?s creative style of thinking.
At less than 300 pages, this fast-paced novel is not going to take too long to read. I raced through it on a plane flight. Whilst Patricia Smiley may be a new kid on the block, it is clear that she is a talented writer and I would be very surprised if this is the last we see of Tucker Sinclair! Books set in Los Angeles litter the bookshelves these days, but for a relaxing day on the beach or by the pool, "False Profits" would be a great choice.
