FBI Special Agent Ana Grey can hardly believe her luck [or is it?] in being teamed with Santa Monica Police Det. Andrew Berringer on a kidnaping case. They've been lovers for a while now, but it is not going to go down well with Andy for Ana to be supervising him on this case. Even though the victim, Santa Monica teenager Juliana Meyer-Murphy, is eventually returned, the trauma to Juliana and her family and the teen's vulnerabilities pull at Ana and keep her involved [even off-the-record and in violation of policy] with Juliana.

To add to her problems; Andy becomes more difficult to deal with on a daily basis; Ana's boss has assigned a young "wanna-be" to ride her coattails; and evidence from a long-cold case turns up in the middle of everything. When Ana forgets to tell Andy about the new evidence from their first case together, he goes completely ballistic and Ana is not only confused about what has happened to their relationship, she starts losing her grip and puts her own job and future in jeopardy.

Having not read the first in this series from ten years ago, I can only speak for this book, but it's brilliant. The depth in Ana's characterization, the plot twists, and the intricate story line and red herrings make this an engrossing read. I do hope it's not another eight years before the next one!
