Nope. It's not about a dog. The 'black-Irish setter' is Kate (Caitlin) O'Rourke. She has the "black-Irish" features, and is a setter for the Pro Italian volleyball circuit. Or was. Due to injury, she has been permanently benched, but is still looking for action.

After being unable to compete in professional athletics, Kate returns to her hometown of Nashville, TN. She, with family, own and run Kehough's Irish Pub.

Near the Pub one evening, Kate witnesses and interrupts a mugging. Since Kate is in great shape (not to mention 6'1"), the victim requests she vacation with her for a couple of days, until the locks to her home can all be changed. Sort of unwillingly, Kate agrees. Upon return home, the victim is murdered. Kate can't "let it go." Although the police are involved (including her brother who is on the police force), Kate seeks the killer. She is as ruthless in her search as she was on the volleyball and basketball courts.

"Black-Irish Setter" establishes Kate O'Rourke as a relentless pursuer of justice. She has physical prowess and a sharp mind. Although not yet private investigator, she has all the makings of wanting to be more involved in solving crime. I think we'll see more of her in that role.

it was a quick, fun read. i think there is room for growth.
