Richard Stark
Class/Genre:   Mystery   Hard Boiled
Series: Parker # 19
Mysterious, Oct 1998, $20.00

Hilliard Cathman has a plan to rob the gambling casino that slowly floats along the Hudson River. To accomplish his quest, he turns to master thief Parker to pull off the heist. Parker puts in motion a sure shot plan that enlists the aid of several professionals. Even though he was uncomfortable with Hilliard, Parker had not factored in betrayal by his so-called partner. Then there is another group, who controls the getaway boat, with plans to re-steal the loot from Parker and associates. The master thief knows he is in for a battle for more than just the cash. His life is on the line.

BACKFLASH is the second Parker novel since his return after a two-decade absence. Like the first tale, COMEBACK, this book is a well-written tale because of the lead protagonist, a professional thief and proud of it. The robbery is simplistic, but that surprisingly adds to the fun of watching the plan unravel. Richard Stark provides his readers with a must story that readers will wonder where the clock went. It will still be as hard as it always was to wait for a new Stark novel.
