This book is a portrait of a soul coming apart. At first we only glimpse the failing seams, but little by little the rifts grow larger and we watch with mounting horror.

David Miller is struggling to maintain a fragile grip on a low level journalism career, and during an evening spent at a bar loses his wallet to a pair of pickpockets. Instead of calling upon police to help him retrieve it, he visits a shabby neighborhood to meet the person who claims to have found it. From there David finds himself involved in blackmail, murder, deception, theft and a tightening circle of lies which he cannot break free of.

As a poignant backdrop to his struggles, we learn that he continues to grieve for a beloved sister who has died of cancer. The eventual collapse of David's psyche comes in the final two pages, and it rocked me back on my heels.

Very, very dark - not for all tastes.
