Tim Underhill is known to readers of Peter Straub from his books KOKO and THE THROAT. He’s one of my favorite characters and so I was thrilled to see that he has returned. LOST BOY LOST GIRL Tim goes home to Millhaven ( which bears an uncanny resemblance to my home town Milwaukee). Tim has come home for the funeral of his sister in law, and while he is there old animosities between he and his brother return. Shortly after the funeral and Tim’s return to New York his nephew goes missing. Again Tim returns to Millhaven under tragic circumstances.

The story is told in an interesting way, switching from what is going on with Tim’s nephew Mark in the close past, to the present with Time trying to discover for himself what happened. As the separate threads of the tale come closer and closer we discover along with Tim what’s been going on.

A totally engrossing book. I was drawn right into the story and lost track of everything else around me. It’s not horror, it’s not mystery, it’s not a thriller. It has a little bit of each. And it terrific. Straub is a master of building suspense and making sure you want to keep the pages moving.
