I had a quandary about reviewing this book. Truth told it’s one of my least favorite reads in the past year. I believe however it is due to my limitations as a reader and not Mr. Thayer’s skill as a writer. That said here’s my rundown of WOLF PASS.
A sequel to the well received THE WHEAT FIELD , WOLF PASS once again features Deputy Pennington of Kickapoo Falls Wisconsin. This time out the murders are the work of a sniper and the victims are once again close to our Deputy. As the only effective sniper in the county Pennington is at the same time primary on the case and a chief suspect. Are the murders the work of Pennington’s political opponents or is his past catching up with him?
He weaves through the case with the assistance of an early profiler (1962) and a Chicago professor. Also on board is Scotland Yard. We are given glimpses of little known and fascinating Wisconsin history and there is more action than in THE WHEAT FIELD.
My problem is the women in the story and Pennington’s weird sexual predilections. They could be enthralling but as written by Mr. Thayer they come off as gratuitous and false. Cheap to the point I wanted a shower. With no respect for either females or men with Pennington’s problem and little to no imagination the sexual passages of this book would be turned down by the letter department of Penthouse. If you can get beyond this you may enjoy this book.
