London, England in the 1880¹s has it¹s share of crime, but perhaps most terrible is the Irish Republican Brotherhood with it¹s bombs going off in public buildings. Cyrus Barker, a private detective...beg pardon, an enquiry agent...and his recently hired assistant Thomas Llewelyn, still being trained, set out to help Scotland Yard. With Llewelyn being Welsh and Barker from Scotland, infiltrating a group of Irish terrorists seems a foolhardy idea at best. But Barker seems convinced they are the Crown¹s best hope to stop a frightening plot intended to push London back to the dark ages. Can it be done?

With the Victorian setting and some interesting characters, this book starts out with a bang and keeps the tension going, finishing up with an unexpected twist. This is the second outing for this pair of likable and clever detectives, and with luck we¹ll see them many times again.
