In this second of the series, midwife Sarah Brandt is caught up in the seedier side of New York City nightlife of rich young men and the "Charity Girls" they play with. The perspective of this story is unique in my experience and worth the read just for that. However there is a subplot of relationship between Sarah and the continuing characters of Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy, his mother and son which is in some ways the more interesting.

The state of medical knowledge at the turn of the last century, and the social etiquette of the era makes for very interesting reading.
