Historical fiction and crime fiction have become somewhat of a niche market recently, but you don’t have to be a historical crime fiction fan to enjoy an Inspector Ian Rutledge story.

“A Long Shadow” presents us with the Inspector, who already has his demons, being stalked by someone with shell casings from the battlefield that he leaves for Rutledge. This stalker even follows Rutledge to his case in a Northamptonshire village. Rutledge is assigned to investigate the attempted murder of a local constable in a forest that is considered to be haunted. The tiny village adds to the mystery with its own missing person from 3 years ago, further complicating the case.

Extremely well written and very enjoyable! You don’t miss the ringing of cell phones or the ability to download messages. Inspector Ian Rutledge is very detailed and cerebral. Not one to be missed.
