Forcing Amaryllis is an engaging debut by Louise Ure. She presents a wonderful sense of place, the southwest, and introduces a new protagonist, Calla Gentry. This book unfolded carefully, and as it did, I became more ensnared by the plotting and the characters. Not to spoil, there were times I wanted to tell Calla, NO! don't go there! but this did not detract from my enjoyment of the book. Ure included some romance, but not too much. She made Calla a real person with real problems. Ure also described horrendous crimes very subtly, without the details clobbering me with an overload of unpleasant visuals.
