Class/Genre: Mystery
Wiley is a man who, when he needs money, goes out and rips off drug dealers. His life sucks and it doesn't seem as though it can get any worse. But worse is what it gets when his daughter Lizzie, who he's not spoken to for a year, is found horrifically killed in a shabby hotel room where she's apparently gone to meet a trick. Wiley sets out to avenge her death, with the assistance of his former best friend Leon. This is an unbelievably noir, brutal, bleak book. The writing is superb, it's utterly compelling, and reading it was a fantastic experience, but I wouldn't want to read books like this all the time. It's altogether too hopeless and cold for me. And, although I felt I came to know Wiley quite well, Leon was a closed book to me. He has a lot of page time, but I couldn't get a grip of his character or where he came from.
