Not your ordinary mystery, Carolyn Wall writes about the rural South in the thirties, a haunting tale of strangeness, poverty and fear.

Olivia lives with her young grandson Will’m behind the grocery store she owns. There is one bedroom, a cold water kitchen with a stove for heat, an outhouse, and nearby a one room shack where her crazy mother Ida lives. Olivia’s father was a self taught veterinarian, now gone.

Olivia spends her days trying to make ends meet during these depression times, dealing with her anger toward a wild and bitter Mama and worrying about her grandson. Someone is killing the wolves on her posted property and Will’m is trying to save three orphaned wolf cubs they have found. She is puzzled by the accelerating hostility of the Phelps family. Each day seems to get harder.

The characters are richly drawn, their life starkly shown. The ending of this novel will hit the reader like a blow to the stomach. A welcome new voice to the mystery genre.
