Series: Heyoka Blackeagle # 2

There's a lot of action packed into this book. Heyoka Blackeagle was raised by a human. Heyoka is a seven foot tall, furred and clawed Hrinn. Having distinguished himself in the previous book, Black on Black, he's now gotten the human rangers to let him train a small mixed Human/Hrinn ranger group. The Hrinn behave more like pack animals when it comes to leadership. They follow a leader because he has shown that he can rip their throat out if they challenge him. This human idea of rank and following orders is a bit strange to them.

Sergeant Heyoka sets out to train his team on a world that was abandoned by their enemy, the Flek. Before long, they are trapped on the planet when the front in the war moves, and the mixed band must not only worry about fighting the Flek, but solving some of the greatest puzzles of the war.

Wentworth does a great job of writing from an alien viewpoint. The book not only has some wonderful adventures, but the characters are very well written. We get a good look inside their heads as the characters grow during the course of the book. In many ways, this is a "coming of age" story. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
