When bones are found in the woods at Wytchurst they prove to be those of a young girl, pregnant, dating back to 1944. DC Lucia Rosetti and Sergeant Fuller are assigned the case. Fuller has been off following the death of his young wife and still is grieving. Neither is enthused about the assignment, particularly as it leaves them out of an ongoing major drug investigation.

The Carmody family is known to be involved in many local crimes including drugs, but have been untouchable. Now a recent drug bust of their associates has them drawing back, but outsiders are trying to take over their business which could cause a war between the two factions.

Meanwhile 73 year old Cass has left his retirement home to travel to Wytchurst. Not the murderer, he thinks he has knowledge relating to the girl who died there. In the 40¹s he was in the army and stationed nearby. Not yet ready to go to the police, he begins to tell his story to the landlord of the Inn where he is staying. His tale takes many days, and ranges over his war experiences.

The story plays out in three parts, ranging over old bones, drugs, and WW II as each investigation goes down different paths. It culminates in a surprising, if coincidental, ending. The characters in this story are true to life and settings well done. The plot will keep you intrigued as the various ribbons interweave. A satisfying British offering.
