Diane Estevez and Dr. Alan Gregory both office in the same building and are close friends. When they discover the body of Hannah Grant both are shocked and uncertain if the death is natural or if Hannah is a victim of some crazed patient. Hannah has left in her will that Diane is to take over her cases.

Next a young girl turns up missing in Boulder right before Christmas. This incident brings back memories of a little girl missing several years earlier.

Dr. Gregory soon finds he is involved in these developing mysteries. Diane and Alan keep trying to figure out what could have happened to Hannah. Then one of Dr. Gregory’s patients begins referring to the missing girl. Diane reveals that the missing girl was a patient of Hannah’s.

Details of a previous case several years earlier come to Dr. Gregory’s mind. This case concerns the parents of the currently missing girl.

Dr. Gregory has bits and pieces of everyone’s stories but can’t nail down any helpful conclusions. To multiply the problem his position as a doctor keeps him from revealing what he does know to the police.

All of these disconnected facts wind up making sense before you reach the end of the book. I have enjoyed most of Stephen White’s books and this is no exception.
