Series: Lady Aoi # 1

The first of a lamentably small series set in Ancient Japan, the western early 11th century, this story is set in the household of a minor prince who calls upon Lady Aoi, a lady in waiting and trained physician to his princess wife, to assist him in resolving a murder with political implications.

I would consider it almost a cozy because of my feelings when reading it, but there is intrigue, and turmoil in the household, riots in the city and swashbuckling adventure enough for those who don't like cozies. Anyone who enjoys historical biographies or the stories of Pearl Buck would probably enjoy this fictional adventure.

This one will go in my small collection of books to be saved, reread and savored.
