As well written as the rest of the series which isn't quite cozy, A Simple Shaker Murder is less cozy that the previous three due to the theme of possible child abuse. Persons who don't particularly care for mysteries set in religious communities may be more likely to enjoy this one because the other theme is corruption of an existing religious organization by outside influences. I enjoyed it more than I expected to with these themes. The depiction of the forces at work in a declining faith were illuminating.
