On recommendations from the group (RAM), I bought the book. I usually wait for more feedback (aka, averaging shall we say), but the concept seemed worth the risk. Sorry am I! The book made it past the 50 page test, and then died in the swamp. Basically, a seemingly fine Federal Court judge in Chicago enlists several compatriots to rob the Federal Reserve Bank---no spoilers here as this is made perfectly clear at the beginning of the book. In fact the crime is clear---the issue being can they do it and can they get by with it.
I am now on page 86 and have resorted to my own way of dealing with books that are getting tedious---opening to pages ahead and at random, reading along, hoping to find some compelling reason to continue. All I'm finding are more and more tedious cases explaining why this man thinks he's a truly fine judge plus more and more tedious reasons why I don't like his wonderful and conveniently, but death-never-explained, dead wife Ellen. Is her death ever explained? Who gives a rip!
Yes, for you who like the book, I've seen the build up to the wonderfulness of Tony Plymouth. To me, this is not enough.
I truly cannot like any one of the main characters---let me remind you that I have read often and beyond page 86 trying to find some reason to continue.
Gayle Lynds had a comment to share at B'Con 03 regarding her (and other authors she appreciates) spy thriller type books---looks like an elephant and runs like a gazelle. Well, this baby looks like an elephant and runs like a hippo who has found a truly fine mud bath!
