Since the power of gods on the Discworld is fed by belief, Om is not a particularly powerful god. Actually Om doesn't even have the power to remember he's a god unless he is in the proximity of Brutha, the believer. Even when he is with Brutha, Om doesn't have the power to change himself from the tortoise form he accidentally took as his power approached it's low ebb. The Grand Exquisitor has plans to become the next prophet of Om, and tries to use Brutha to foreward his ambitions, little knowing that as the only true believer in Om Brutha is the only possible choice for the position. So The Exquisitor drags Brutha on an expedition, and Brutha carries a tortoise with despite the ubiquitious comments of, "A tortoise! you know there's some good eating in them."
